The history of “urban renewal” and city planning in America is essentially the history of displacement of underclass, urban minorities; usually blacks; at the whim of local elites. Natives have experienced similar displacement, though it has almost always been in rural environments where natural resource extraction was the goal rather than rising real estate prices. The results have been predictable: destitute poverty in the effected communities and the destruction of organic communities. What can the state expect in response but violent resistance?
