Native America Calling: The Gun Control Debate

On Native America Calling: Gun Control Debate we discussed gun control from a Native American context. This show was hosted by Tara Gatewood with myself, Vince Rinehart, as a guest. It aired live on January 25, 2013. Download the Show Here.

For a very brief rundown of my view on the subject see my article Our People Were Always Armed.

For an excellent perspective on addressing violence in America, see this article by Chris Buggen, who argues that the focus of the debate on mass shootings is unproductive: A Broader Based Response to Shootings.

For a perspective on what I talk about when I say “sensible security does not result from fear” see the website of iconoclast security specialist Bruce Schneier.

Finally, here is the awesome song, Autumn, by Savage Fam. A portion of this song was played during the break.

Friday, January 25, 2013 – The Gun Control Debate:
The gun control debate is heating up again. Last week, President Obama unveiled a set of gun control reform proposals for the US Congress and 23 executive actions on the issue. How does Native America fit into the gun control conversation? The second amendment was passed in 1791 when Native Americans were not American citizens some were at war with the U.S. government. The historical memory of Native people is long and for a group of colonized people, voluntarily giving up rights to own guns defies logic. Yet gun violence affects Native America with elevated murder and suicide rates. What do you think about the gun control? What message do you want to send to Congress and the Obama administration? Join us for a conversation about guns and gun control. Guests include: Vince Rinehart (Tlingit), activist and blogger.
