Haudenosaunee delegation crosses the U.S.-Canada border at Niagara Falls on July 14, 1928. It is the “Return of Border Crossing Privileges to all Indians First Annual Celebration.”
A number of Tribal Nations straddle international borders. Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian nations find themselves spread across what is now called southeast Alaska, British Columbia, and the Yukon Territory. Additionally, a number of tribes in the Puget Sound are divided from their tribal relatives and allied nations between the international border between Washington and British Columbia. A reclaiming of our tribal identity would include crossing these borders to visit our relatives under our own authority, ignoring the imposed colonial borders or the US and Canada.
