Animated Tlingit Stories

Here’s a great series of short, animated Tlingit stories. Each video comes in three versions: English subtitles, Tlingit subtitles, or no subtitles. If you are starting with the basics in Lingít X̱ʼéináx̱ Sá: Say It in Tlingit! then some of these simple sentences should be recognizable. I am watching these with my 2 year old son, and he is familiar with toowaa sigoo (to want something,) because we use it every day. Two of the stories are similar in structure, and swap out the main character, what he wants, and where he goes to find it.

These are great videos for toddlers, or for someone like me, who is speaking Tlingit at the level of a toddler! As with any story time with little ones, it is important to interact with them outside of the narrative in the story. Start with talking about the story in English as it is playing; point to the things you know in Tlingit and say them in Tlingit. Repeat what is said in Tlingit. Eventually, talk about the story in Tlingit as it plays. Tlingit resources can be found here for helping you translate and learn.
